Christine Jenkins' Top Ten Ways to Have a Great Exam Day

  1. The night before, pack your books and get a good sleep, and leave home or school in plenty of time. Use the checklist sent to your teacher for this purpose.
  2. Come with a parent, encouraging friend, or your teacher.
  3. Have all your selections and page numbers marked on the reverse of the timetable (numbered sticky tabs can be used instead of page numbers). Your teacher can do this at the closest lesson to your exam; clip the timetable to your music book!
  4. Practise at the same time of day as your exam. Don't play hard right before you leave, other than your warm-up.
  5. Eat healthy small meals, and dress in something that makes you feel special. Bring shoes in the winter.
  6. Check in early, and ask where the washroom is if needed.
  7. Be in the chair outside the door as soon as the student before you goes in. Ask your companions to wait in the seating area, so you can quietly prepare for the exam.
  8. Think about how much the examiner loves music, and is looking forward to hearing you.
  9. Smile and introduce yourself when the examiner comes to get you. (Boys, take that baseball cap off before you go in!)
  10. Set up the bench or chair the way you like it, and play/sing your heart out!
